Instead of banking everything on just one water, come somewhere where there is a range of fishing to be had. A heatwave that makes the rivers low and stillwaters difficult may bring mullet and bass on to feed along the coast. A storm that builds dangerous seas and swells the rivers may stir lake waters and bring stillwater fish on to feed. The dull overcast that ruins dry-fly fishing will keep coarse fish feeding throughout an autumn day.

Local Fishing:

The Casterbridge is in an area of chalk-streams. Classic trout fly-fishing is available locally but it is popular and advance booking is advisable. Grayling fishing can sometimes be arranged.

Although salmon and sea trout do swim close to the Casterbridge they rarely arrive in our area during the open season and so we cannot fairly suggest you seek them here.

There are several still water fisheries offering rainbow trout nearby; day tickets can almost always be had.

A typical three pounder caught trotting with a centrepin. We are within 20 miles of some of the finest river fishing for coarse fish in the country. In season, tickets to fish the Dorset Stour are easily available including waters where exceptionally large fish can be caught. These are classic trotting and specimen hunting waters offering particularly fine chub, roach and pike fishing; especially so in the last quarter of the year. Still water coarse fishing is also available nearby.

And, of course, we are ideally placed for someone wishing to explore the Dorset Coast. Within a short drive we have sand and shingle beaches, rock stances, piers, harbours and tidal lagoons. Particularly enjoyable is walking some of the more rugged shores with light tackle: fly, spinning and float fishing gear are recommended.

A guide can sometimes be arranged, e-mail reception for more details.
Please give 24 hours notice if you would like us to prepare a packed lunch for you.
Try spinning and plugging for bass at first light.
